Reading the level
The level is shown in dBFS (decibels relative to digital full scale). 0 dBFS is the loudest sound that can be captured digitally, and more negative numbers are quieter. If the bar moves roughly between -40 and -10 dBFS when you speak normally, the level is fine.
- Green: comfortable level
- Orange: peaks above -6 dBFS. Turn it down a little if you expect loud moments.
- Red: clipping, where the signal hits the maximum and distorts. Lower the input volume or move back from the microphone.
If no sound comes in
- Check the microphone permission from the lock icon next to the address bar.
- Make sure your system input device is the right microphone and is not muted.
- Check the mute switch and cable on your headset.
- Pick another device from the microphone list above.
Echo cancellation, noise suppression and auto gain
Browsers and video call apps normally use the microphone with all three turned on. Record with them on and off to hear the difference. Turning auto gain off shows the microphone's own input level more accurately. Some browsers may ignore some of these settings.
